Not another skew post?

No, not really, although I have improved my skew work and skew sharpening. Today I want to tell you what a good experience I had with Record Power when my CamVac extractor fan failed.

It went with a bang and a dying whine and blew the house circuit breaker. This made it easier to see the sparks, because the lights went out. I turn in the cellar, which has no window, and if it hadn't been for the battery backup in my spotlight I'd have been woodturning in Braille. The smell of burned insulation was strong.

I logged onto the Record Power website and spoke to a couple of guys who suggested changing the brushes. I did not think this would be the root of the problem, though they were quite worn, and once the brushes were changed I tried again. Darkness, utter black. The lights went out and the burning smell intensified. I went back on to the guys at Record Power and they immediately agreed to send out a new motor, which arrived in under a week (The machine was under two years old and had only been used for light hobby turning).

At this point I was familiar with disassembling and re-building the motor, so it was a quick job to swap out the old one for new and...

...and it worked fine. No blackouts and no more burning. Fabulous. So just in case you are wondering, the guarantee from Record Power stands up. Thanks Guys!

More skew

So I've been using my skews and on occasion I get a lovely finish, but I find the tool hard to control. I think it may be the grind angle...

The Skew

The skew is the most fearsome woodturning tool with the best finish of all. Your website administrator is going to record his progress...
