Dennis Wake
About the Demonstration
Dennis was big on safety. Always wear PPE. Stand to the side when turning on lathe
He uses a speed of 1200 to rough out work but says use a speed with which you're comfortable.
To sense the right height for the tool rest when using a roughing gouge, find where you can easily cut a gulley. Adjust height to achieve this.
When parting off, he suggested presenting the tool beneath the centre then push in. This gives a cleaner edge.
In the photos you can see an a hot water bottle opener (made with a skew)
Staring with a square work piece
Saw a slot at one end to grip the bottle stopper
Make a hole at the other end for a dowel
Then turn round
Turn a ball shape around hole
Narrow the shaft to 1/2" above slot. Insert a 9mm dowel
